The Road to Hope

A film by Cyrielle Deschaud

Short film | In production

Atiana, Meriem, Sultana and Hind, all immigrants, confront the social, cultural and familial factors that have shaped their lives. These women, from Africa, the Middle East, India and Central Asia, meet twice a week around a common goal: learning to ride a bicycle. Through their weekly rides, they discover not only themselves but also sisterhood, something which none of them had known before. Banned or inaccessible in their home country, learning to ride becomes a metaphor for their inner revolution, a personal conquest.

This short documentary paints a luminous portrait of the female condition through the struggles and victories of immigrant women, which are often invisible in immigrant stories. The bicycle becomes an eloquent symbol of one’s transition to a new place, and their journey of carving out a new identity in their new home; a means of taking control of their lives and asserting their place in a society that offers them new possibilities.
