ERIK CIMON

Erik started as a writer, composer, and performer for the electropop duo Moonbass, after which he turned to directing by working on numerous music videos for Montreal counter-culture groups of the 1990s and 2000s (Caféïne, Les Breastfeeders, Les Jardiniers). He graduated at Concordia University and the Canadian Film Centre and also directs commercials and short fiction films which have won awards here and abroad (Next, Broil, Le piano de Louise, The Cello, Audience Award, Off-Courts Festival, France, 2008). He then undertook numerous documentary films and series that highlight unique realms (Ying Yang Le Célibat, finalist for the Gémeaux Prize for Best Text and Best Direction of a Documentary Series in 2005, Les Citadins du Rebut Global, Gémeaux Prize for Best Directed Documentary Series in 2006, Montreal en 12 lieux, Gémeaux Prize for Best Documentary Series in 2007, Partir Autrement 4, Finalist for the Gémeaux Prize for Best Social Interest Magazine in 2012). In 2011, he signed his first critically acclaimed documentary film, Mtl Punk: La Première Vague, followed by Montréal New Wave, Gémeaux Prize for Best Art and Culture Documentary in 2016. L'École Autrement, a shocking documentary on the education system in Quebec, was broadcast on Télé-Québec in the spring of 2023.
